Signs From Loved Ones: Love Never Dies

By MJ · November 1, 2026 · 7 min read

Death may separate us physically, but I believe love is something that can never truly die.

Have you ever experienced a moment when you felt someone you loved, someone who is no longer physically here, was reaching out to you?

Maybe it was a song that played at exactly the right moment. A bird that appeared unexpectedly. A familiar scent that reminded you of someone you lost. Or perhaps a dream so vivid that you woke up feeling as though you had actually been with them.

I believe there are moments in our lives when the veil between this world and whatever lies beyond it feels a little thinner.

And I believe that sometimes, those moments are our loved ones reminding us that they are still with us.

Because one thing I have come to believe with all my heart is this:

Love never dies.

Death Changed Everything I Believed

Having experienced my own near-death experience, I look at life and death very differently than I once did.

When my heart was stopped during a medical procedure, I found myself in a darkness unlike anything I had ever experienced.

I was still me.

I didn't have my physical body in the way I understood it, but my awareness remained. I existed. I was conscious.

And during that experience, I encountered Jesus.

That experience changed my understanding of what it means to die.

It left me believing that our existence is far greater than the physical body we inhabit during this lifetime.

And if consciousness can continue beyond the physical body, I believe it's worth considering that the love and connections we share may continue as well.

For me, death is not the destruction of love.

It is a change in how we experience it.

The Little Signs That Mean Everything

I believe our loved ones can reach us in ways we might not always expect.

Sometimes through dreams.

Sometimes through music.

Sometimes through animals, familiar scents, or moments that seem far too meaningful to ignore.

And sometimes it's simply a feeling.

A sudden sense of peace.

A warmth that comes over you when you're thinking about someone.

An overwhelming feeling that you're not alone.

I've experienced moments in my own life that have made me stop and wonder whether someone I love was reaching out.

And I don't believe every meaningful experience needs to be explained away simply because we cannot physically see its source.

I believe there is so much about consciousness and the spiritual world that we have yet to understand.

Love Is More Than the Physical

When someone we love dies, we grieve their physical absence.

We miss their voice.

We miss their touch.

We miss the everyday moments that once seemed so ordinary.

And that grief is real.

But I believe love is more than something created by the physical body.

I believe it is a connection that reaches beyond what we can see, touch, or measure.

The relationship may change when someone dies, but I don't believe the love between two souls simply disappears.

How could something that has shaped us so deeply, something that has become part of who we are, suddenly mean nothing?

To me, love is one of the most powerful things we experience in this lifetime.

And I believe it continues beyond it.

We may lose someone's physical presence, but that doesn't mean we lose the love that connects us.

When Our Loved Ones Visit in Dreams

I've heard many people describe dreams in which a loved one who has passed appears to them.

Often, these dreams feel completely different from ordinary dreams.

Their loved one may look healthy, peaceful, or younger.

Sometimes they speak.

Sometimes they simply smile.

And sometimes there are no words at all, just an overwhelming feeling of love.

I believe some of these experiences may be genuine connections.

Perhaps when we sleep, when the noise and distractions of our physical world become quiet, we are more receptive to experiences we might otherwise overlook.

I don't claim to understand exactly how it works.

But I remain open to the possibility that our loved ones can find ways to let us know they're okay.

You Don't Have to Search for Proof

I also believe there is something important we need to remember.

Not everyone receives a sign they recognize.

And if you've been asking for one and nothing has happened, please don't believe that means your loved one has forgotten you.

Love isn't measured by how many signs we receive.

It isn't measured by dreams, coincidences, or extraordinary experiences.

And I would never want someone who is grieving to feel that they must constantly search for reassurance.

Sometimes we become so focused on looking for something extraordinary that we forget to recognize the love that already exists within us.

The memories.

The lessons.

The ways someone changed our life.

The pieces of them that we continue to carry.

Those connections matter too.

What If They Never Really Left Us?

I often wonder whether death is less about an ending and more about a transition.

What if our loved ones are not gone in the way we have always been taught to understand death?

What if they have simply moved beyond the physical world we currently experience?

What if the signs we receive are little reminders that the connection remains?

I know not everyone will share my beliefs, and that's okay.

We each have our own experiences, perspectives, and understanding of what happens when we die.

But my own experience has taught me to remain open to possibilities far greater than what we can physically see.

And through the many extraordinary stories shared on The Returned, I continue to hear accounts that deepen my curiosity about the nature of consciousness, love, and life beyond death.

For me, the message is simple.

Death may change the way we connect, but I believe it can never destroy the love between us.

Love Never Dies

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this, it's that love doesn't have to end simply because a physical life has ended.

We can continue loving someone.

We can continue speaking to them in our hearts.

We can continue honouring their presence in our lives.

And we can remain open to those beautiful, unexpected moments that make us feel close to them again.

Maybe it's a song.

Maybe it's a dream.

Maybe it's a bird sitting outside your window.

Or maybe it's simply a feeling that arrives when you need it most.

I believe love has a way of reaching us.

Not always in the way we expect.

Not always when we ask.

But sometimes in the quietest, most beautiful moments.

Because the body may die, but love never does.

A Moment of Reflection: The Love That Remains

When we lose someone we love, it's natural to focus on everything we can no longer experience with them.

But what if we also made space to recognize everything that remains?

The following journal prompts are an invitation to reflect on the love you continue to carry, the moments that have brought you comfort, and the ways your connection with someone may still be part of your life.

Find a quiet moment with your journal. Allow yourself to explore these questions without judgment or expectation.

You don't need to have experienced a spiritual sign to participate.

These reflections are simply an opportunity to honour your loved one, explore your feelings, and gently work through the emotions that come with loss.

Journal Prompts

1. Have I experienced a moment that made me feel unexpectedly close to someone I've lost?

What happened, and what did that moment mean to me?

2. What are the little things in everyday life that remind me of my loved one?

Is there a song, scent, place, animal, or memory that brings their presence back into my heart?

3. If I could tell my loved one one thing today, what would I want them to know?

Allow yourself to express anything you've been holding inside.

4. In what ways does the love we shared continue to live through me?

Think about the lessons they taught you, the ways they shaped your life, and the qualities you carry forward because of them.

5. What would it feel like to believe that love is not something death can take away?

How might that belief change the way I carry my grief and remember the person I love?

A Gentle Reminder

Grief is not something we simply get over.

When we love someone deeply, their absence changes us.

And there is no right or wrong way to navigate that loss.

Some days we may feel connected.

Other days we may feel the weight of missing them.

Both are part of loving someone who is no longer physically beside us.

Be gentle with yourself.

Allow yourself to remember, to cry, to smile, and to experience whatever emotions arise.

And if a beautiful, unexpected moment makes you feel close to someone you've lost, allow yourself to appreciate what that moment means to you.

Because love doesn't end at death. It continues in the heart, in the soul, and, I believe, beyond this physical life.

With love and gratitude,

MJ
